After all the rumors and the teasing, Capcom has finally confirmed an XBLA and PSN outing for Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Worst kept gaming industry secret in recent years? It’s definitely a contender.

This version is being touted as the “definitive version” of the game and will be based on the Dreamcast code base. There will be an online mode of course, and since Backbone is in charge of MvsC2, the game will largely be using the net code in Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix.

The game will also get a couple of HD upscaling options — “Crisp” and “Smooth” — to accompany the unfiltered “Classic” mode. These options are applied in real-time so you can easily change them even if you’re in the middle of a game. Widescreen support is also supported. Here’s an explanation of how it works:

Play area is unchanged, and this is not a zoom and crop like HD Remix was. To put it simply, the gameplay area will be in a 4:3 field, while the viewing area will be widescreen. At the same time, for purists and competitive play, a 4:3 option (with vertical bars on the left and right) still exists.

They’re also throwing in some music options like volume control and custom soundtracks for those didn’t like the game’s original score. Also, there are no unlockables in this game. All 56 characters will be available to play right from the start.

If you’re already dying to have a taste of the new and improved Marvel vs Capcom 2, don’t worry. The PS3 version’s demo will be on the PlayStation Store this week (most likely along with the Thursday update). It’ll also be on the Euro PS Store soon after.

The release date has been set for this summer. Price is US$ 14.99 for the PS3 version and 1200 Microsoft Points for the Xbox 360 version. For now, check out this gameplay video.
