Lost in translation: WoW multilingual PUGs
Is there such a thing as a language barrier in the World of Warcraft? Yes, there is. It’s worldwide, with some servers spanning over a number of countries that don’t necessarily have English as their official language. Multilingual instance groups are not really uncommon, it’s just that some players steer clear of them.
Anyway, some players actually prefer playing in PUGs that are not English speaking/multilingual. Reasons vary, but in essence it boils down to less chatting and more grinding/questing. It rings true that since there is a language barrier, you wouldn’t chat as much and more would things could be accomplished. Plus, nearly everybody knows WoWspeak – save maybe for some who are lingo deficient.
WoWspeak can actually be used by mixed players to strategize, much like giving hand signals. For those who are having a hard time communicating, better bust out your old high school Spanish or French books. But worry not, somebody might make a software that would translate everything.
For now though, don’t you wish you stayed awake during French 101?
