LucasArts VP Peter Hirschmann Talks About New Game with Day 1 Studios

LucasArtsSci-fi geeks of the world unite! In yesterday’s article, we wrote about LucasArts (the Star Wars people) and Day 1 Studios (MechAssault: Phantom War, FEAR) collaborating on a new game.

Many people hoped that the game would be about Darth Vader (we were hoping the same thing, considering that the last movie, “Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith,” was all about Padme looking out the window while Evil Anakin slowly became Lord Vader).

Nope. It looks like this game will be set outside the Star Wars universe. Too bad, Star Wars games are always such big hits (3 of last year’s top 10 bestselling games were Star Wars games, according to the market research giant NPD Group).

What’s the new game about? Well, Day 1 made this partnership with LucasArts partly because they were impressed with what LucasArts and Pandemic Studios did with Mercenaries (at the time Mercenaries came out, many people were impressed by the gameplay, free-flowing action, unique missions, and total mayhem in the game). We think that’s good news, because that means that Day 1 and LucasArts are trying to come up with something just as satisfying in terms of action, carnage, and story (and it’s bound to have great gaming technology built in).

When will the game be out? Well, it’s still under development, but they already have a playable version of it. And LucasArts Vice President Peter Hirschmann said that in the past few months they’ve come up with builds that are “unique, new, and different.” Can we believe him? Of course he’d say good things about it because it’s his game. But because it’s LucasArts, chances are they will deliver.

What consoles will the game be for? Next-generation consoles, LucasArts said. In fact, they want to develop a game with such awesome gameplay and features that it’s only available on next-generation consoles! That sounds great, but what exactly are they planning to put in the game? Well, it’s a LucasArts game, and like LucasFilms movies, everything is top-secret while it’s still under production. So LucasArts Vice President Peter Hirschmann just said, “I can neither confirm nor deny any and specific features or feature set of the product.”
