Microsoft gears up for ESRB awareness program

From the looks of it, Microsoft is dead-serious about its plans to promote ESRB ratings and their 360 safety settings. To avoid the usual criticisms that gaming console manufacturers and video game developers usually get every time a school-shooting occurs, MS has recently announced that they’re partnering with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Best Buy to help promote awareness and inform parents about the ESRB ratings placed on game boxes.

They started this “ESRB-ratings Awareness” program at the DigitalLife conference in New York. The Big Apple isn’t the only city getting a lecture; thanks to their “Is Your Family Set?” tour bus, the crew will be able to promote awareness in 20 more cities. Microsoft will also engage in a nationwide listening tour to hear out the concerns and whims of parents, guardians, and caregivers regarding appropriate gaming fun for the little ones. For technophobic parents, the company will also give a guide to the world of video games and computers.

Aside from the various speaking engagements, they’re also planning a massive campaign which will involve in-store material that will promote video game rating system awareness. And they’re not stopping there because they’re also gearing up for a national advertising campaign about the ‘Xbox 360 Family Settings’ which is intended for parents.

Not surprising, considering that their Chairman is planning on retiring on 2008 to focus on his humanitarian efforts focused on global health and learning. Anyhow, here’s a video of what’s inside the tour bus — well, we ain’t surprised that Viva Pinata made the cut.
