Here’s a useful application for those who like to play on their mobile phones. Introducing the mobiPad, a homebrew application from Alexander Erifiu and Mario Grammer. mobiPad lets you use the Wiimote to control your mobile phone. Use it as a controller for your games or as a remote for your media player.

Needless to say, the app just makes use of the Wiimote’s keypad, not its motion sensing capabilities. The app works with phones on UIQ technology (found in Symbian OS phones) or Nokia’s S60, which means it’ll work for certain phones from Sony Ericsson, Motorola, BenQ, Arima, and a lot of from Nokia.

Now, some of these phones will be able to connect to a TV, so you can enjoy Wiimote play to its fullest, but you may be wondering what the deal is if you want to play on just your phone. Well, the devs expressed it this way in their FAQ:

Does this make sense? The controller is much bigger than the screen!

… and human hands are bigger than both. By the way you can connect for example the Nokia N95 to a TV.

At any rate, it’s a fun and interesting app, though I doubt I’ll take a Wiimote everywhere with me just to play games on my phone. But it’ll certainly be useful when I’m just at home or if I’m stuck in a car on a long trip. Here, watch a vid of the app in action:
