News from Japan: Man caught stealing Wiimote

Time for another weird videogame-related crime parable. According to the Mainichi Daily News, a man in Nagoya, Japan, faces charges after he allegedly injured a couple of guards who spotted him trying to steal a Wiimote and a CD at an electronics store.

Investigators reported that 37-year-old Kazunari Tanaka was spotted shoplifting a Wiimote and a music CD on the first floor of a Bic Camera store near Nagoya Station. Both items have a combined price of Â¥6,900. Too bad they didn’t report what the CD in question was. It could have provided an insight into Tanaka’s motivations. Yes, I kid. If this happened in America, I’m wondering which industry they’ll try to pin the blame on: the music industry, the videogame industry, or both?

Back to the news. When Tanaka was confronted by a pair of guards, he allegedly punched them. Tanaka denied the allegations, and was quoted as saying, “I had no intention of shoplifting and I wasn’t violent.” Police officers showed up after a passerby reported the scuffle. One thing Tanaka did right is that he didn’t try to use his Wii Boxing-trained muscles on the police, because if even Darth Vader doesn’t stand a chance against them, what can one man do?
