PS3 firmware 2.42 is here *Update 2*

PS3 - Image 1The latest firmware update for the PlayStation 3 has just hit without warning. We’ve confirmed this by checking out our own unit and firmware 2.42 is right there for the taking. We’ve got more details after the jump.

White PS3 - Image 1And the PlayStation 3 world screeches to a halt again for an all-important firmware update newsbit. This just in: PS3 firmware 2.42 is now up and ready for your downloading pleasure.

No details were posted yet on what this blitzkrieg of an update brings about, but we’ll be sure to tell you as soon as we find out.

Given the recent troubles that some users have encountered with updating immediately, some of you might have to hold off until the smoke clears. If you want to see what firmware 2.42 brings ahead of everyone, then by all means do so and tell us how it went. Stand by for the changelog.

Update: Users have reported the following changes for PS3 firmware 2.42

  • Life with PlayStation seems to have been released. You can access it by going into folding@home where you’ll see a globe you can interact with. Zeroing in on a specific area will yield news from that locale.
  • A Bluetooth mic fix has been added.

Update 2: Sony has come out with official word on firmware 2.42. It reads:

Just wanted to give everyone a quick heads up that a PS3 firmware update (v2.42) is now available for download. This update improves the playback quality of some PlayStation 3 and PlayStation format software.
