PS3 gets first firmware update: FW 1.02

That... was quick

Okay, so you won’t really need to upload parts of Ridge Racer 7 to the HDD to enjoy all those beautiful cars, but you will, however, need to upgrade your PS3 firmware to play RR7, Resistance: Fall of Man, Madden NFL 07 and Genji: Days of the Blade. And the PS3 isn’t even out yet…

Sony knocked on IGN’s door to tell them about the firmware update for PS3 test units that are now available,  and also to deliver the news that games just mentioned above will need the said update for it to play. The company didn’t disclose the exact changelog for FW 1.02, and all they mentioned to IGN was that it addresses “housekeeping issues,” that it’s just for tightening a few nuts and bolts here and there, as well as a few “unnamed goodies.”

(We also don’t get what IGN was referring to with “FW 1.1 and 1.2” in the source article, when in the Madden FW article of the same day they say that FW 1.02 is the PS3’s first FW update. What the… Typo-much?)

PS3 FW 1.02 should be available on the game discs themselves as well as online, according to IGN, so those who don’t plan to plug their consoles onto the ‘net yet can still play these titles by updating the FW from the disc. No word yet on whether retail units will ship with 1.02 already installed.
