For a game coming from the Lord of RPGs, it probably sparked some frustration in many fans that it took more than five years to develop NCSoft‘s sci-fi themed MMORPG, Tabula Rasa.  In a recent interview with Games Industry, Richard Garriott, creator of the phenomenal Ultima series, reminded third-party onlookers and fans that the game took a long time to develop since the project reset two years into development.

Now the first time they mentioned the development reset, they only mentioned that the game turned into one hapless piece of space junk due to a clash of titanic egos and cultural barriers. Consistent with the claim, however, was the fact that Garriott and the team behind Tabula Rasa, tried their best to make the game cater to both the East and the West.

But after the fact that too many compromises sprung up from having to cater to two entirely different cultures (the East being even more varied from nation to nation), the Tabula Rasa development team halted development two years after it started and went back to square one.

Consequently breaking off from the Lineage team that contributed to the first leg of the development process, NCSoft managed instead to focus on the Western viewpoint and culture for the upcoming release, and then consider Eastern viewpoints and culture and tweak the game as necessary.

Although the game will not be moving over to next-gen consoles any time soon, “Lord British” Garriott did mention that after the release of the game and all kinks were ironed out, they would look for what platforms fans request the game to be ported to and take the respective platform development into consideration.
