Rockstar’s Sam Houser: powerful people want to put us out of business

Rockstar's Sam Houser - Image 1It’s a different take of what Rockstar’s founder actually did say in an interview as one of MCV Entertainment’s exclusive feature, but it’s factually accurate. Sam Houser, who many claim to be the driving force behind the Grand Theft Auto franchise, was executive producer of Grand Theft Auto 3. That game  became the direction of the subsequent iterations of the sandbox game later on. He says that powerful people have been out to put Rockstar out of business, and they’re quite plenty.

All ears were on Rockstar North‘s Sam Houser, brother of co-founder Dan Houser, after the latest feature of MCV Legends ushered in the co-founder’s life struggles and achievements over the years in the industry. In that same feature, Houser divulged one of the many challenges that he and the company had to face: people out to get Rockstar.

Houser told MCV that “surviving in an environment in which large numbers of powerful people want to put you out of business for their own political or economic capital” was the biggest challenge he had to face. He did not name these people, and neither were names pressed from him.

While he wasn’t part of the creation process (DMA Design were the forerunners of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, thus, Rockstar North was not yet founded), Houser did contribute to the later games. He and his brother were key in Rockstar North, though now they rally all recognition toward the Rockstar Games brand.
