Sell your PS3 pre-order on eBay, EBGames cancels it?

eBay. Make a quick buck out of launch day.Cyotik of Evil Avatar forums smelt this rumor cooking in the air. According to what he heard, EBGames managers in Canada were told via conference call that they are to cancel their respective PS3 pre-orders that would appear in a list of eBay PS3 auctions that the home office was compiling. In other words, if you pre-ordered to resell it on eBay, kiss the pre-order good-bye.

Cyotik says that this seems to be a joint initiative between eBay, EBGames, and Sony. He also says that eBay’s recent policy requiring pre-order sellers to post their receipt details also dovetails with this initiative. Because: it makes it easier for EBGames to find out which pre-order went to eBay.

Responses at Evil Avatar went both ways. Negative side decried it as crap. “There’s nothing wrong with selling your pre-orders online, so as long as they’re valid, etc.” Some even suspect that it’s because Sony fears launch units would be even lower than announced and are trying to scare off some pre-orders. Given that Sony’s had to cut some Japanese launch units recently, those guys are going to have a field day with that theory.

Then there’s the positive side, which praised the initiative. Which is to say, “Good riddance to jerks who just want to make a quick buck off of the PS3 launch, and depriving honest gamers of their chance at the console.” And then the obvious question: does this mean that some stores are going to resell those cancelled pre-orders?

Of course this is still just a rumor, and there’s nothing officially confirmed (we haven’t even heard the wailing and gnashing of the teeth of eBayers yet) so every theory, supposition, bashing, opinion, and conclusion drawn from here is just pure conjecture. We’ve even emboldened the warning to emphasize the d**n point. No one better be calling EBGames, or GameStop, or even eBay, yet.
