Sony hardware sales down, game sales up…
Looking again at last week’s Media Create Japan game charts it seems that that week was the poorest in terms of sales for the Sony PlayStation 3 so far.
Gamasutra reports that the PlayStation 3 saw sales fall from 16,889 units to 15,520. This despite the strong software sales performance of PlayStation 2 software titles thanks to – as fellow blogger Tim Y. has noted – Naruto Shippūden: Narutimate Accel. Still, hardware sales for the PS2 fell from 17,787 units to 14,234 units.
PlayStation Portable hardware sales also fell from 39,077 from the previous week to just 31,503 units. The bright side is that two PSP titles made a rare appearance on the software top ten. Yes, those eastern folks just love Gundam SEED Alliance vs. ZAFT Portable for the PSP. They love Gundam so much that the even have the custom themed prophylactics to prove it.
The good news here is that despite the decrease in hardware sales, the PS2 still saturates the Japanese software top ten, and Gundam shows that a PSP title can get into the top ten, which is good for Sony. The goal now it seems, is to get PS3 titles to emulate that.
