Sony’s PlayStation 3 UK pre-order cancellations worth 10 million pounds

UK cancellations of PlayStation 3 at 20,000 units - Image 1In a recent article, Brand Republic announced some surprising news. They said that some 20,000 PlayStation 3 pre-orders were cancelled because of the run-up to the console’s delayed launch last March 23.

Some 20,000 PS3 units costing £ 425 each means around UK £ 8.5 million of lost sales for Sony. This is rather odd considering that the PlayStation 3 launch has broken the sales record, selling 165,000 units from a total of 220,000 units released in the UK.

So it seems that despite the alleged cancellations, Sony still broke the record. Another interesting factoid that we should consider is that Sony actually gave away free HDTVs at their launch, and that the TVs they gave away totaled a whopping £ 250,000. Something to ponder on right there.

No official word from Sony has been released so we couldn’t confirm whether the facts regarding the cancellations are true. More on this topic as we get more info.
