The PS3’s HDD bay in pictures

Sigh... hard drives.

There are some lucky folks in the Game Informer offices. Apparently, they woke up one morning, went to work, and found a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes a box from Sony. Lo and behold, as it was a PlayStation3 unit for them to use.

Now we’ve seen the PS3 in pictures before. Most recently, the 1Up offices got a visit from a Borat lookalike and acquired their very own “PS and 3!” There have also been tech specs and other shots involving Sony’s hardware, but we never actually got to see the hard drive of the beast until now.

The funny thing about this debugging station version of the PS3 is something that would be a fervent wish for gamers who want massive hard drive space, perhaps enough to encompass the collected knowledge of an entire galaxy. NeoGAF forumgoers noticed that you could probably take out the HDD drive, and were thus speculating as to whether you could replace the drive with something else when you felt like it, such as the drives from your computers that aren’t SATA or *gasp* the drive from your 360. That would probably be cool if it was doable, but there’s a good chance that little wish will never get fulfilled until enterprising members of the homebrew community do some inventive tweaking of the console.

Guess you’ll just have to put your one terabyte drive back into your computers then. Oh, and yes, that IS a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup in the picture below. Delicious.

Update: Yep, we mentioned the ability to replace the SATA drives previously. To clarify, we wish we could stick everything else into the slot, from other types of drives to a working Xbox 360 drive. See above.
