The real deal: a Wii-modded “WiiCade”

As kingdoms rise and falter, technology still pushes ever so onward into the nearing horizon. You’ve got microchips that you can’t see with your naked eye and currency that’s been reduced to the proverbial 1s and 0s. The information age is here; the next-gen already a reality. You can’t blame some hardcore gamers if they want to go retro and “down”-grade their Wii into an Arcade unit.

Of course, “down”-grade here doesn’t mean anything negative, really. In fact, if you’ve heard of the WiiCade website where you can download Flash homebrew, this one we’ve got right here is the REAL WiiCade. Real in the sense that he’d turned his Wii console into an Arcade unit.

You must have heard of some webcasts by “Graphic Designer, Editor, & Button Pusher Extraordinaire” Aaron and how he was planning this Wii mod. Looks like he succeeded and it looks mighty fine (anything with a Link sticker on the side would look mighty fine, that’s what I think). How was he able to do it?

You can start a virtual console game,… walk up – and start playing on the arcade. You can even leave it running. The cool thing is that there is no way to get back into the wii menu from the GameCube controls (buttons & joystick). So it really adds to that dedicated game cabinet feel.

You can see from the third pic (the one showing his DVD/game collection) where he snuck in his sensor bar. Also, the last pic shows the PS2 and GameCube X-Arcade controller adapters. Check the pics out for yourself! And we promise you don’t need to insert any tokens just to enlarge those pics!
