The Wii: 480i vs 480p

So what’s the big difference? Why do the component cables make all the difference? Well, the little console that could outputs anamorphic, EDTV 16:9 DVD Quality at 480p. While most DVD players output 480p in 16:9 ratio by stretching the image and then sending the image to the display, the Wii outputs the full (720×480) resolution and lets the TV handle it.

Cheese reports in his video game blog over at Gamescentral that you get 12.5% more pixels than 480i. So yeah, go get those cables.

He posts these pics of his Wii’s output, 480p on the left, 480i on the right. Not only are there less jaggies, the color is brighter, and Cheese claims that it all looks hi-def enough for him.

It’s a good thing that Nintendo is apologetic about not making those component cables easier to acquire.
