Top 10 underselling games of 2009 in Japan

failJapanese retailer Oosaka King has released their top 10 list of 2009 games that performed way under financial expectations. Do take note, though, that financial failure does not necessarily mean gameplay failure. There were several factors that can be attributed to why the results came out this way, although in the end, there can only be one word to describe the fate of these underperformers: Sucks.

Topping the list is Square Enix’s Blood of Bahamut for the DS. I distinctly remember the big hoopla this caused when it was first announced. So what went wrong? Maybe just the fact that it was released a mere few weeks after another giant title, Dragon Quest IX. Timing is everything in this industry, after all. Taking in the second spot is Monster Hunter 3 Wii’s standard version. The rest of the top 10 finalists are right below. It’s interesting to note that 70% of the games are for either the Wii or the DS. Also, that Gran Turismo PSP made it to the list too.

  1. Blood of Bahamut (DS)
  2. Monster Hunter 3 (standard version) (Wii)
  3. Taiko no Tatsujin Wii Dodon to Nidaime (Wii)
  4. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (DS)
  5. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Wii)
  6. Gran Turismo (PSP)
  7. Dynasty Warriors 5 Special (PSP)
  8. Dragon Ball: Revenge of King Piccolo (Wii)
  9. Tamagotchi no Narikiri Channel (DS)
  10. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona (PSP)
