Nintendo Wii - Image 1Here’s a big step for the Wii homebrew community: Homebrew developer svpe managed to finalize the working version of the USB mass storage device tester for the Nintendo Wii, a simple homebrew program that lets Wii users preview the contents of their USB storage devices.

The application may only seem too simple at first glance, but it no doubt opens a big gate of possibility to future Wii homebrew projects. Here’s what the application can do in a nutshell:

  • looks for any USB mass storage devices connected to the Wii
  • tries to display a file listing of the root folder
  • creates a file called testtest.txt with the content ‘test’ there.

But here is an important reminder: you can use this program with FAT 16 and FAT 32 file storage devices ONLY. Trying this program with non-FAT file systems will result in data corruption, so be careful. Of course, it’s always a good idea to back up your files even if you have a FAT-formatted storage device on hand.

The download file doesn’t include a readme, so we suggest reading up about Wii homebrew first if you’re not too sure in how to go about installing and using homebrew software for Nintendo’s waggly console.
