Wiimote spices up Red Steel multiplayer mode

redsteel3There’s an interesting bit about Red Steel games taking advantage of the Wiimote‘s built-in speaker to produce weird noises when your sword takes damage in multiplayer mode. It’s true! It will also emit clicking sounds when you run out of ammo. Well, a clicking sound is boring, but if you get to hear the Wiimote ring, you bring it close to your ear as you would a normal telephone, and it will whisper to you what your special task will be in the “killer mode” part of the game. And no one is going to hear it except you.

That’s what Ubisoft lead designer Roman Campos-Oriola tells us in an interview at Eurogamer. That’s nothing short of fantastic when we’ve known all along that Red Steel on Wii won’t have the option for online play. At least, we’ll have some sort of unique mode to play on where we can get bonus and negative points if we can’t fulfill the objectives told to us via the Wiimote’s speaker.

An example of this objective is when you’re told to “kill player number four and avoid killing any other players. If you kill any player before killing number four, you’ll have negative points.” Obviously, you’re going to have to dodge bullets when other players try to shoot you, but you can’t shoot just anyone — except player number four.

This may be another reason why fans should get a copy of Red Steel by the time it hits the shelves alongside Wii’s launch. We’ll keep digging for more details so stay tuned.
