Yaaargh: Southeast Asian pirates packaging GC titles as Wii games

The next time you’re in Southeast Asia, you may want to double-check that copy of Resident Evil Zero Wii game you just picked up. After all, that DVD you’ve got might not be as it seems. The Philippine gaming site GameOps is reporting that some stores in the area have apparently started dusting off their old GameCube stocks and have repackaged the discs as Wii games. Here’s a sample pick of the packaging – complete with the white Wii logo:

Kind of strange that a few months back, fellow blogger Glen D. wrote up an interesting piece on the piracy situation in the said area. Based on Glen’s correspondent, piracy in the country was thriving for the Xbox 360 and Wii consoles, given that both units have already been successfully hacked.

Worse yet, imagine the look on that uninformed gamerdad or gamermom’s face, when they purchase a copy of Wind Waker, thoroughly convinced by the local shops that it’s the hottest-selling Zelda game on the Wii.  Ahh, pirates, what’ll they think of next?
