2K responds to questions about BioShock PS3 visuals

So apparently the PS3 version of BioShock (PS3, Xbox 360, PC) doesn’t have quite the same level of graphics as its Xbox 360 counterpart. This has caused quite a furor on the game’s official forums, and so community managers from 2K Games have stepped in to give some answers.

According to a post by 2K Community Manager Elizabeth Tobey, the BioShock PS3 team is using “a combination of optimization and filtering” to maximize the game’s visuals, which has resulted in the blurry effect in comparison shots. This isn’t just a generic blur filter, though:

when compared to the 360, you will notice it looks slightly “blurred” but this is not a simple blur “filter” that we overlayed on the graphics. it is just a result of how we developed the game on this new and unique piece of hardware, trying to keep framerate, gameplay, and graphics optimal and true to the game’s vision.

The textures on the Big Daddy – a sore point for a lot of the posters – was also addressed a bit. The texture differences are still quite noticeable, but according to Tobey, “the Big Daddy texture is not a good measure for the entire PS3 experience”.

The white bars spotted by some gamers, on the other hand, is a legitimate bug. 2K is reportedly working on a fix for this issue, and it’ll be rolled out along with the game’s Additional Content update.

2K Games has also decided to include 1080p support for the game, in a way. Due to the game’s memory requirements, the team wasn’t able to implement a true 1080 mode and instead added a scaled version of the game’s 720p mode.
