Caverns of Time’s “new” models date to pre-beta WoW

Caverns of Time For those of you not around in the Land Before Beta (I’m definitely certain I wasn’t), the supposedly “new” human models that you might have spotted while skirting back through time in World of Warcraft‘s Caverns of Time actually date to that… era. Up in the official U.S. forums, there’s a growing nostalgia for the “things that were,” especially for some of the earlier female models. Ahem.

So what’s the story behind these old models and why do they still exist in The Burning Crusade?

Well, essentially it’s all just word now, but some pre-beta players have claimed that Blizzard decided to rework the models come Beta. Instead of working on the old models, however, Blizzard opted to create new models from scratch.

Old content, however, never packed up and left. If you’ve often used the WoW Model Viewer, you’d see a collection of pre-beta models hanging around in your updated client’s files. We have to admit that although the low-polygon count might scare off some players, the texture detail and approach to ‘personality via appearance’ definitely snags an 11 in this blogger’s one-to-ten scale.

Though many will highly doubt that Blizzard will snatch a couple people or two to do some ‘physique-al’ adjustments (heh heh!), people are hoping that somehow Big Blue might tweak the masculine build of the human male, which admittedly could use a couple of… inflations, here and there.
