Dell Exploding Laptop Saga Continues, This Time in Florida

After a series of reports that the lithium-ion batteries in Dell laptops are faulty and actually causes fire and explosion, Dell is once again under authorities’ scrutiny as one of its laptops is linked to a house fire in Florida.

Fire Chief Paul Dezzi from the State Fire Marshal’s Office in South Venice, Florida did say that “None of us know what the cause is”, but home-owner Louis Minnear is convinced that the fire is started by the battery in his wife’s Dell laptop, which was sitting on papers on the family’s sofa. The 20-minute blaze caused severe damage to Minnear family’s house and possessions, leaving them homeless.

The fire started a week after Dell recalled 4.1 million faulty laptop batteries, 18% of the company’s laptop production during the period from April 2004 until July 18, 2006. Dell warned last week that “Under rare conditions, it is possible for these batteries to overheat, which could cause a risk of fire.”

Dell has been under so many fire-related dilemma including the most well-known fire case that happened in Osaka, Japan just two months ago when a laptop computer was photographed as it burst into flames.
