Fils-Aime: 2 million Wii sold in less than 2 months

Fils-AimeYou can’t accuse Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime of being a pessimist. While some analysts see Nintendo’s Wii glass as absolutely full, Fils-Aime sees the sales glass overflowing. According to his projections, Wii sales will hit the big One M mark within the next two to three weeks. He’s not talking global sales, mind you. That’s just for North America!

In his interview with Reuters, he said stores will move another million Wii units by the second week of January. So all in all, Nintendo is looking at two million Wiis sold in just over a month. If it this prediction comes true, we may have to change the expression “selling like hotcakes” to “selling like Wii”. But Fils-Aime is not alone in his optimism. Game developer THQ earlier said they expect Wii sales to hit multi-million almost instantaneously.

Even though business forecaster Merrill Lynch doesn’t share his optimism, Fil-Aime remains very confident in the Wii because it is designed to succeed. “We designed [Wii] from the get-go to be profitable… throughout its entire life.” He then took a swipe at Wii’s two competitors saying they do more than what gamers need, making their consoles very expensive.

So it’s a battle between two game consoles that threw in the proverbial kitchen sink and the Wii that just wants to let gamers have a great time. Which side are you on?
