The “soon” is now here. Final Fantasy IX is now available for download from the PlayStation Store. The JAPANESE PlayStation Store.

If you do have a Japanese account for the PS Store, then be ready to shell out JPY 1,500. And do make sure you’ve got room for it; it clocks in at 1550MBs.
Still no word on its North American release date, though. Just keep your fingers crossed for that one. You too, Europe.
