Madden NFL 08 (PS3): Latest game patch causes 80009 Error

Madden NFL 08 for the PlayStation 3 - Image 1If you own a copy of Electronic ArtsMadden NFL 08 for the PlayStation 3 (also on the Xbox 360, Wii, PC, DS, PSP, PS2, Xbox, GameCube and Mac OS X), you may want to avoid going online for the moment.

Word is out at the official EA forums that Madden 08‘s latest update patch is causing an 80009 error after it was loaded into the PS3. Now, if you’re reading this message after you ran into the reported problem, you can still remove the update by exiting Madden 08, and following these instructions (quoting EA_Violet):

  1. Cycle to the Game setting in the PS3 console and highlight the Game Data Utility folder and press X on the controller.
  2. Highlight the Madden NFL 08 file and press the Triangle button.
  3. Choose to Delete the file and then restart the game. (Note that this only remove the update and not your saved data.)

Take note that you have to stay offline – going online will just prompt you to update again, which in turn will cause your game to malfunction (again). Violet over at the EA forums states that the company’s looking into the matter, and that a fix will be released soon. We’ll let you know when that happens. Until then, stay sharp.
