It was inevitable that Nintendo would field at least one top down vertical shooter on its new WiiWare game service. Case in point: the revamped version of Digital Builders’ Protöthea will finally be making its way to Nintendo’s Wii console this May along with several other downloadable titles.

Players can get to control their ships by flying through futuristic planets across a 3D background in this vertical-scrolling shooter. The controls make use of both the Wii Remote and its Nunchuk accessory, with directional control relegated to the Nunchuk for a more accurate feel of dogfighting in the game.

Don’t take our word for it though. You can watch the said aerial battles through a video that we’ve provided below. Protöthea will be sold for 1,000 Wii Points and will be one of the initial titles to debut with the WiiWare service.
